PRENATAL CAREThere are so many wonderful things about midwifery care! Starting with 30-60 minutes of face-to-face or Telehealth appointment time with your midwife at every appointment! Prenatal appointments are every 4 weeks until 28 weeks, every 2 weeks until 36 weeks and weekly until the birth of your baby and more if needs arise. During your prenatal care you will receive: monitoring of you and baby's growth, education, nutritional counseling, routine labwork, ultrasound (if desired), homeopathic support, and much more.
LABOR AND BIRTHDuring you birthing time, you will be attended by Paula, Arianna and their team. She will attend you from active labor, throughout your birthing process and during your immediate postpartum. Her whole team is there to support your birth, the way you want it, in a safe and gentle manner. Providing you with encouragement, guidance, reassurance, and respect.
HOME BIRTHSWhen birthing at home, your midwife will monitor your vital signs and the progress of your labor. We will also monitor the baby's well-being and make sure you are staying nourished and hydrated. Your midwife will bring to your home all the normal basic equipment you would find in a standard labor and delivery room in a hospital. We carry, oxygen, resuscitation equipment, anti-hemorrhagic drugs, IV fluids, homeopathic remedies and herbs.
BIRTH CENTER BIRTHSA birth with your midwife at A Family Affair Birth Center is a safe alternative to hospital birth for women and families. The birth center offers a warm, home-like environment where you will have a private room for giving birth. You get to make yourself comfortable, wear your own clothes, eat, soak in the tub, and give birth should you desire!
WATER BIRTHSMany of our clients wish to have water births. Water serves as a natural relief of the discomforts of labor and has been affectionately coined the "aqua-dural". There is a good article about Water Birth on EvidenceBasedBirth.com and some good FAQ's here.
VBACVBAC (Vaginal Birth After Cesarean) or more specifically an HBAC (Home Birth After Cesarean) is not something we take lightly. More often than not, a mother seeking an HBAC has had some type of trauma surrounding her previous cesarean. It is extremely important to clear any emotional trauma that may be surrounding a mother's previous births. We ask that parents do their research and be truly prepared for their choice of a homebirth.
DOULA & MONITRICEA Doula provides expecting families with continuous emotional support, physical comfort, and assistance in obtaining information before, during, and just after childbirth. Studies have shown that having a Doula at your birth decreases the length of labor and the need for pain-relief drugs. Doulas help families feel more secure and cared for. Families who have a Doula are more confident, have greater success with breastfeeding and are less likely to develop postpartum depression. A Montrice, does everything a Doula does and a little more. If you hire Paula or Arianna as your Montrice (not your midwife) she will attend your birth as a support person and not a medical care provider. But as a Licensed Midwife, she can and will monitor your vitals, baby's heart tones, and progress of your labor while at home.

POSTPARTUM CAREYour midwifery care continues after the birth of your baby. Your midwife will visit you in your home on Day 1 and Day 3, and then at 2 and 6 weeks postpartum in her office. Each visit she will access the general, physical and emotional well-being of you and your baby. Get a complete set of vitals, and review things like breastfeeding, sleep and nutrition.
elective postpartum servicesPlacenta Encapsulation
Traditional Chinese medicine has utilized the placenta for thousands of years to support and nourish the mother as she recovers from childbirth. This personalized medicine aids in postpartum hormone balancing and nutrient replacement. For a small additional fee we provide the placenta processing of your choice; frozen, encapsulated, and/or tincture. Also included with your placenta is a print and cord keepsake. Belly Binding Abdominal binding is a traditional postpartum art used in many cultures globally. It is primarily used in the US to support women recovering from c-sections. Thankfully the practice is becoming more common for all postpartum moms. Binding the abdomen offers support by stabilizing the muscles, skin, and internal organs that throughout pregnancy were stretched, separated, and pushed out of place by the growing baby. This creates a more comfortable healing process. For those interested, we carry a binding kit that includes a muslin fabric binder, instructions, and herbal salve. On day three we also offer a short instructional session to do the initial binding and answer any questions you may have.
